Troubleshooting Charger System Problem - Part 2

When I got up in the morning, I thought everything was fine. Well, it wasn’t fine. The lights were blinking on the charger. Soooo frustrating.

So I reviewed the manual and phoned technical support. Tech support felt nothing was wrong with the charger and it sounds like a battery problem. They suggested disconnecting everything and letting the charger discharge. And then reconnect things one at a time until I find the problem.

I decided to NOT disconnect everything. I shut the AC power off, in effect disconnecting it. I then removed the charger feed to the engine battery. I also removed the temperature sensor from the charger. The one thing I left connect was the charger feed to the house bank. My thinking, these 3 batteries are not that old, they were installed August, 2009 (two years ago). The engine battery is very old. It was installed in the fall of 2005, and to be honest, I don’t remember if it was a new or used battery. So it is 6 years old or older.

In this photo of our charger you see the engine wire disconnected. I also disconnected the temp-sensor wire. It is the one that looks like a phone cord right behind the engine wire.

I was making the guess, that this battery, the engine battery, might be the issue. The battery appeared fine. The voltage was good, and the battery would start the engine, but I couldn’t think of anything else to try.

With the house bank connected and everything else disconnected, I turned the charger power back on. Now all I could do was wait while the charge runs through its 3-step charging cycle.

More too come as I continue with this problem...

Troubleshooting Charger System Problem

Ahoy me hearty.

Well, last night I noticed the fan running a LOT on our Xantrex battery charger. Cheri and Jonathan are away, and I am sitting here by myself (and the pets). I was reading, TV turned off, and my laptop was running. So it was quiet, and I could here the fan clicking on and off, in what I thought, short intervals. I didn't actually measure them but is was probably 15-20 seconds...

Knowing something wasn't right and even though it was after 8pm, I decided to look into it. I removed the pots and pans fron their cabinet and removed 2 screws from one side of a pegboard that separates the boat guts side from the pots and pans side. Bending the pegboard out (it was still attached on the far side), I could see the current lights on the charger were randomly flashing...Not a good thing. Grabbing a flashlight I looked in and saw the vents on the charger were covered with a quilt, I mean bunch of lint and dust.

So I shut down the charger and vacuumed up the crude. I double checked the batteries in their cabinet and they looked fine and felt cool (not hot). I let the charger set for about one hour and then decided to go ahead and turn it back on, rather than leaving it off until morning.

More too come as I continue with this problem...

CaptRob

Havin' Fun Each and Every Day

You can have fun doing normal daily activities.

The point of this post is share you can have fun doing normal activities during your day.

Yesterday, when we were shopping I found a bit of time to be a bit silly. We were in a bookstore, looking at books and magazines, between Target and Publix shopping. I put on a silly hat and Admiral Cheri took my picture.

What makes it even funnier than me posing with the pirate hat, I was making "Arrrrrrr" sounds. Between photos, Admiral Cheri lowered the camera and said to me, "Ya know, the camera doesn't record sound."

Hahahahaha!!

Sooooo, the most important thing to remember, take some time to be silly and have a moment of FUN!

Arrrrrrr.

Nearly FULL Birthday Morning Moon

Ahoy me hearties.

I stepped outside with the dogs this morning, to a clear sky and a just past setting full moon. So I snapped a photo with my iPhone (thank you Steve Jobs) and I am sharing it here.

It was around 7am, give or take a few minutes.

I hope you have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend too!

Arrrrrrr.

Rebuilding Our Worn-Out Shower Diaphragm Boat Pump

Big Boat Project!!

Well not really that big, but this is a "real" boat project. People always ask what do we do all day?

The shower pump quit working. It started to fail about 2 months ago. I took the pump apart and cleaned it and examined the pump. It appeared, overall, in good shape. The two valves were shot and the other rubber parts where worn out. I got a rebuild kit and put it to the side.

The pump limped along until Saturday. So I pulled it out and tore it apart and rebuilt it with "some" of the new parts.

I hope you enjoyed this video of a real boat project.

CaptRob

Feathered Friend Visits the Area

Ahoy me Hearty.

A few days ago, me Admiral noticed a feathered friend sittin' on the top of a mast. The sailboat was just 3 or 4 slips down from us.

Do you know what kind of bird this is?

There are many in this area.
International Talk Like a Pirate Day is Today!

Talk like a pirate day is Sept 19th so I think we should all learn some pirate lingo.

Ahoy! -- Hello.

Avast! - Stop, pay attention.

One Aye, as in Aye! - Yes, I agree.

Two Aye's, as in Aye aye! -- I understand and I'll get right on that.

Grog: A pirate's favorite drink, any alcohol other than beer.

Something you have probably noticed over at Pirate Lifestyle TV on YouTube,

http://www.youtube.com/user/PirateLifestyleTV

is the re-uploading of the very first (original) videos. I am going back to the beginning of Pirate Lifestyle TV and editing the intro of the early videos with YouTube’s in-house video editor. It is fun to look back at how this all began and how far we have come.

Here is the playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD05934FF5D7F0DF3

CaptRob
