Troubleshooting Charger System Problem - Part 2

Posted by CaptRob on December 12, 2011 at 9:20 AM

When I got up in the morning, I thought everything was fine. Well, it wasn’t fine. The lights were blinking on the charger. Soooo frustrating.

So I reviewed the manual and phoned technical support. Tech support felt nothing was wrong with the charger and it sounds like a battery problem. They suggested disconnecting everything and letting the charger discharge. And then reconnect things one at a time until I find the problem.

I decided to NOT disconnect everything. I shut the AC power off, in effect disconnecting it. I then removed the charger feed to the engine battery. I also removed the temperature sensor from the charger. The one thing I left connect was the charger feed to the house bank. My thinking, these 3 batteries are not that old, they were installed August, 2009 (two years ago). The engine battery is very old. It was installed in the fall of 2005, and to be honest, I don’t remember if it was a new or used battery. So it is 6 years old or older.

In this photo of our charger you see the engine wire disconnected. I also disconnected the temp-sensor wire. It is the one that looks like a phone cord right behind the engine wire.

I was making the guess, that this battery, the engine battery, might be the issue. The battery appeared fine. The voltage was good, and the battery would start the engine, but I couldn’t think of anything else to try.

With the house bank connected and everything else disconnected, I turned the charger power back on. Now all I could do was wait while the charge runs through its 3-step charging cycle.

More too come as I continue with this problem...
